Physics provides an understanding of the true nature of the world we live in and its place in the universe. The subject covers a wide range of topics covering classical historical discoveries through to state of the art concepts informing modern cosmology and particle physics.
Physics is of course an important qualification forming a gateway certificate providing access to engineering, physical science and some medical sciences. Physics is a challenging but rewarding subject requiring a pre disposition to mathematics and problem solving.
Physics is taught as a discrete subject from S3 through to S6 . In S3, pupils follow a course based around the Level 3 and 4 experiences and outcomes of the Curriculum for Excellence. From S4 upwards, a number of SQA certified courses are available to pupils commencing with National 4 and 5.
National 4 and 5 Physics is based on three units:
1. Electricity and Energy; which covers topics such as energy sources, electrical safety, practical electrical and electronic circuits and heat transfer.
2. Waves and Radiation; including wave characteristics, nuclear radiation and the electromagnetic spectrum.
3. Dynamics and Space; covering kinematics, forces and cosmology.
