Ambition, Confidence, Happiness and Respect.

 

National 5

This course is designed for all learners but may be of greatest appeal to those with an interest in Business. The combination of practical aspects and ICT based learning will enable learners to apply their skills and knowledge to real life business contexts. 

The course aims to enable learners to develop:

Knowledge and understanding of business concepts in a range of contexts

Awareness of the processes and procedures businesses use to ensure customers’ needs are met

Enterprising skills by participating in practical activities in realistic business situations

Financial awareness through a business context

An insight into the impact of the economy on businesses and our daily lives

 

How this course can help you

This course makes a significant contribution to general education through developing a range of essential skills which will stand learners in good stead regardless of the career path they eventually choose.

The course will develop skills such as enterprise, employability, numeracy, ICT and citizenship. It also supports literacy and health and wellbeing and considers the needs of all learners by providing the flexibility for them to achieve in different ways and at a different pace.

Assessment

To achieve the course award the learner must pass the Course assessment which consist of 2 components: 

a question paper worth 90 marks worth an assignment worth 30 marks

Expectations of the department

In Business, pupils will be expected to always try their best. There will be regular homework throughout the course. Pupils will also be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and keeping track of their progress. Pupils will have the opportunity to give feedback on individual units of work as well as their experience in Business overall.

Higher

Business Management aims to develop skills and knowledge which will allow students to access understand and contribute to the dynamic and complex business and information environment. Business is a key dimension of modern society and enterprise education. There has been a growing recognition of the role business education can play in preparing students for employment, both by extending their understanding of business and by developing core skills of problem- solving, working with others and information technology, knowledge and understanding of business concepts in a range of contexts.

 

How this course can help you

Business Management will enable students to develop analytical skills, as well as to acquire a deeper knowledge and understanding of the role and operation of business.

The core of the course is decision-making.

It gives students a thorough grounding in the place and importance of business in a modern society and provides transferable skills such as the ability to adopt a logical approach and to communicate complex points clearly.

It highlights the importance of enterprise to all organisations.

Progression

Students can progress to Advanced Higher Business Management or courses in Further or Higher Education, or to employment in a wide range of occupations in a modern business environment.

Advanced Higher

The Advanced Higher Business Management Course prepares learners to play an active part in Scotland’s vibrant and innovative business culture by equipping them with an understanding of the national and global nature of business.

How this course can help you

Learners develop analytical and research skills by investigating real organisations in a range of contexts.

They gain a perspective that gives them the ability to research, analyse and interpret the actions and decisions taken by such organisations, and to explain how these actions and decisions might affect businesses and their economic success.

Progression

Students can progress to courses in Further or Higher Education, or to employment in a wide range of occupations in a computing environment.

Assessment

The Course presently consists of three mandatory Units.  A pupil’s grade is based on the final exam 80 marks an assignment 40 marks

Expectations of the department

  • A significant amount of learning will be self- directed and require pupils to demonstrate a more mature approach to learning and the ability to work on their own initiative.
  • Pupils will be encouraged to use an enquiring, critical and problem-solving approach to their learning.
  • Ample opportunity will be given to practice and develop research and investigation skills and higher-order evaluation and analytical skills.
  • Regular feedback sessions/discussions will be held on a one-to-one basis and on a group basis where appropriate.
  • Pupils will also be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and keeping track of their progress. Regular homework will be given and is an essential aspect of this course.
