Creativity is at the heart of D&M and can be compared to product design. Students begin with a design brief, and through using skills such as drawing, designing, modelling and manufacturing, they will build up a portfolio of work with a close study of:

Environmental Impacts

In Product Design, Architecture, Engineering and many other design-based disciplines, creativity and problem-solving skills are fundamental. The subject develops in students the tools to apply creative thinking to solve complex problems, work independently, and increase confidence as they apply new skills in context.


Qualifications and Assessment

 As well as a portfolio of work that can be used when applying for further education or jobs in the creative industries. 

We currently offer:

National 4 – Coursework throughout the year make up the N4 units as well as an Added Value Unit (AVU) 

National 5 – You will be expected to complete a written exam as well as a design assignment that involves physically making your designed product. Question Paper (45%), Design Assignment (30%) and Practical Assignment (25%).

Higher – You will be expected to complete a written exam as well as a design assignment. Question Paper (47%) and Assignment (53%)

Things to note when considering Design and Manufacture:

  • You must enjoy drawing and designing as this is key to being successful.
  • Be aware that you are only required to be in a workshop for N4 & N5.
  • You will focus on commercial manufacturing at Higher.
  • You will be asked to problem solve and think critically throughout the course as you design and create.
