S5-6 English

Ambition, Confidence, Happiness and Respect.

 

In S5 and 6 there are a variety of courses to study, and your teacher will guide you to the best course for you.

National 5:

This course is available in S5 and S6. You will sit an exam at the end of this course and submit a Portfolio of writing. The exam comprises:

  • Reading For Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation
  • Critical Essay – on a text studied in class
  • Set Text Question – on a Scottish text studied in class
  • Portfolio – submitted to SQA for marking around Easter time
  • Spoken Language – this is assessed in school

The exam comprises:

  • Reading For Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation
  • Critical Essay – on a text studied in class
  • Set Text Question – on a Scottish text studied in class
  • Portfolio – submitted to SQA for marking around Easter time
  • Spoken Language – this is assessed in school

 

Higher:

This course is available in S5 and S6. You will sit an exam at the end of this course and submit a Portfolio of writing. 

The exam comprises:

Advanced Higher:

This course is available in S6. You will sit an exam at the end of this course and submit a Portfolio of writing and a Dissertation. 

The exam comprises:

  • Textual Analysis of an unseen text
  • Critical essay on texts studied in class

 

Whichever level of study you choose, English will be really valuable for preparing you for life beyond school. All the skills you learn in reading, writing, talking and listening will help to make you effective in communicating with others.

Expectations of the department

There is an expectation that you will engage in independent learning out with the classroom. This will include:

  • Research for persuasive writing
  • Preparation for group talk tasks and presentations
  • Consolidating skills learned in the classroom
