Physics provides an understanding of the true nature of the world we live in and its place in the universe. The subject covers a wide range of topics covering classical historical discoveries through to state of the art concepts informing modern cosmology and particle physics.
Physics is of course an important qualification forming a gateway certificate providing access to engineering, physical science and some medical sciences. Physics is a challenging but rewarding subject requiring a pre disposition to mathematics and problem solving.
Physics is taught as a discrete subject from S3 through to S6 .
Offered in S5 and potentially S6 Higher Physics course has four main areas:
1. Dynamics and Space which includes topics such as equations of motion, the Doppler effect and Einstein’s theory of special relativity.
2. Particles and Waves which looks at nuclear physics and particle accelerators, like the Large Hadron Collider.
3. Electricity, which includes electrical circuits and semiconductors.
4. Researching Physics.
Each course has elements of practical work and research. Certification is based on formal assessment and an element of coursework .
